The Swifts FC
I know that Slough, Bucks is hardly the Midlands, but I had for some time intended to locate the site of the original & famous (they had 8 England capped players) Swifts team, whose name was copied by others, including my own Walsall Swifts. The other oft copied name being Wanderers, from the original London old-boys club.
Starting with the knowledge that the Swifts played on a ground 'near or behind' the Dolphin Inn, it took a while to locate the Dolphin as it was an old coaching inn built along the Bath Road. I eventually found it at the junction of Bath/ Uxbridge Roads, although there was a choice of two 5 acre fields behind the Inn. Eventually, a 1925 map defined the football ground, which by then had seen the Swifts come and go and evolve into Slough Town FC. Cruelly, the field which was not the football ground was still there but the Dolphin Inn was demolished and replaced with a motel, and the football ground was built over by a large Sainsburys. Anyway, for any other Swifts FC lovers, Ive put a couple of site pictures up on the photo section.
